Bernard de Fontenelle was a Huguenot philosopher and writer, born in Dieppe on June 8, 1657. He was educated at the Jesuit college at La Flèche, and studied law at the Oratorian college of Montaigu before going on to the Sorbonne. In 1686, he met Pierre Bayle, who had been a pupil of Descartes, and after the death of Cartesius became an ardent defender of skepticism.
